On the Rocks
On the Rocks
Capitale-Nationale, QC
Set within a wooded site in Québec’s Capitale-Nationale region, On the Rocks takes shape around the natural rock outcrops that define the landscape. Rather than working around them, the residence embraces these formations, making them an integral part of its architectural composition.
Its open W-shaped plan unfolds across the site to maximize solar orientation, frame views of the surrounding forest, and preserve the privacy of the outdoor living spaces. Each wing is carefully positioned within a fluid composition where circulation, sightlines, and natural light come together effortlessly.
Parts of the residence appear to rest directly on the bedrock. The terrace and main living areas extend this close relationship with the site, creating the impression that the architecture emerges from the landscape rather than being placed upon it.
Subtle shifts in the plan guide movement throughout the home while refining views from within. A split-level wing takes full advantage of the site’s topography, enhancing daylight and strengthening the connection between the home’s living spaces.
A restrained palette of wood, steel, and stone reinforces the residence’s timeless character. Together, these materials create a home that is deeply rooted in its surroundings, where architecture exists in quiet dialogue with both the land and the forest.
